A First Day Cover has a cachet, a stamp, and a cancel:
First Day Cover Glossary
- stamp, postage
- Adhesive paper representing postal fees paid for delivery of mail.
- cancel
- The postmark on a stamp that indicates usage by defacing it.
- cachet
- Artwork and text applied to the face of an envelope.
- combo
- One or more thematically related stamps affixed to an FDC.
- dial
- Circular portion of a postmark, usually containing the date, city, state, and zip.
- event cover
- A cacheted cover, not an FDC, prepared as a souvenir of a specific event or anniversary of an event.
- FDOI
- First day of issue. The day a new stamp was first available for sale.
- Killer bars
- The horizontal lines of a postmark which cancel the stamp.
